Andhra Pradesh Civic Elections : The Supreme Court has issued important directions over allegations of irregularities and attempts to prevent candidates from filing nominations in Andhra Pradesh's urban local body elections. During a hearing on Wednesday, October 21, the court directed the election authorities not to publish the final list of candidates until October 25. The case is linked to a petition filed by YSR Congress, led by Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. The party has alleged that opposition candidates were prevented from filing nominations through violence and intimidation. Following the court's directions, attention has now turned to the next steps in the election process.
Court Directs Action on Security Complaints
The Supreme Court directed the authorities to decide by Thursday evening on representations submitted by political parties and candidates regarding security concerns during the nomination process. It also ordered that affected candidates be given 48 hours to file their nominations after the relevant decisions are published. In addition, the state's Director General of Police (DGP) has been instructed to ensure adequate security at all nomination centres. The aim is to provide affected candidates with a fair opportunity to participate in the election process while their complaints are being addressed.
Why Did YSR Congress Approach the Court?
In its petition, YSR Congress sought an extension of the nomination deadline. The party alleged that opposition candidates had been prevented from filing their nominations through violence and pressure. It also expressed concern that if the final candidate list were published, nearly 63% of candidates could be declared elected unopposed. According to the party, this could raise questions about whether all candidates had been given an equal opportunity to contest the elections. However, these allegations have been made by YSR Congress and have not been established as facts by the court.
Allegation of Candidate's Abduction in Kuppam
YSR Congress state general secretary L. Appi Reddy had appealed to the State Election Commissioner to intervene in cases of alleged violence during the elections. He claimed that party candidates were being targeted and called for justice for those affected. Reddy also alleged that Vijay Kumar, a candidate for the chairperson's post in Kuppam, had been abducted from his residence in DK Palli. The party has demanded action against Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders allegedly responsible for the incident.
Chandrababu Naidu Rejects the Allegations
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu has rejected the allegations made by YSR Congress. He said his coalition government was working for development, while accusing YSR Congress of pursuing a destructive agenda. Naidu alleged that YSR Congress had resorted to violence in the past and was doing so during the current elections as well. He also stated that there was no place for violence in his life, but added that he would not back down in dealing with criminals and troublemakers.
