7th Pay Commission DA Hike : The 7th Pay Commission continues to be in focus as central government employees and pensioners await the next Dearness Allowance (DA) hike, effective from July 2026. Earlier, expectations were high that the government would announce the increase before Dussehra. However, no official announcement has been made so far. Now, employees are looking forward to a possible decision before Diwali, with hopes pinned on the next Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The government has not yet officially confirmed any DA hike.
Employees Look to Cabinet Meeting
The Central Government generally revises Dearness Allowance twice a year. The January revision is usually announced early in the year, while the July revision is typically announced around September or October. This pattern has raised expectations that the government could announce the latest revision soon. Employees and pensioners are now watching for updates from the next Union Cabinet meeting. However, there is no official confirmation that the proposed DA increase will be approved at the meeting.
3% DA Hike Expected
According to media reports, central government employees and pensioners could receive a 3% increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) this time. As per the figures cited in the report, DA stood at 60% from January 2026. If the government approves a 3-percentage-point increase, the rate could rise to 63%. However, this remains an estimate. The final rate will become clear only after the government approves the proposal and issues an official order.
Inflation Data in Focus
The expected DA revision is assessed using the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW), which tracks changes in retail prices affecting industrial workers. According to the figures mentioned in the report, the AICPI-IW increased by 1.2 points in August 2026, reaching 154.4. Based on these figures, estimates suggest that the July 2026 DA revision could be in the range of 3% to 4%. However, the index figures alone do not confirm the DA hike. The final decision rests with the Central Government.
How Much Salary Could Increase?
If DA rises from 60% to 63%, the additional monthly amount will depend on an employee's basic pay. For example, an employee with a basic salary of Rs 18,000 could receive an additional Rs 540 per month. Similarly, employees with basic salaries of Rs 25,000, Rs 30,000 and Rs 40,000 could see monthly increases of Rs 750, Rs 900 and Rs 1,200, respectively. These calculations are based on an assumed 3-percentage-point increase in DA. The actual benefit will depend on the officially approved rate and applicable salary rules.
Pensioners May Also Benefit
The potential increase could also benefit central government pensioners. If the government revises Dearness Relief (DR) at the same rate, pensioners could receive an increase in their monthly pension. For now, both employees and pensioners are waiting for an official announcement. Whether the government approves the DA hike before Diwali and whether the increase will be 3% or higher will become clear only after the final decision.
