The Delhi Police has registered two FIRs to investigate allegations that protesters participating in the anti-SIR agitation in the national capital were assaulted by right-wing activists. The action follows complaints and social media posts highlighting the alleged incidents. According to reports, the investigation covers 10 individuals and social media accounts. The allegations are under investigation, and the claims have not been established in court.
Protests Continue Over Electoral Roll Revision
Delhi has witnessed demonstrations in recent weeks over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition parties, student groups and pressure groups have demanded the resignation or impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. They have also called for a return to electoral rolls prepared before the revision process and challenged decisions taken under the current election leadership. The protests gained further attention following a newspaper report about objections reportedly raised by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi concerning the SIR process and the use of Form 6 during voter registration.
Social Media Posts Prompt Police Action
Activists, citizens, media organisations and the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) reportedly drew attention to videos and posts alleging assaults on demonstrators. Content shared by political groups, including the Indian Youth Congress, also featured in the complaints. The police action aims to investigate the allegations and establish the circumstances surrounding the reported incidents.
Separate FIRs Over Prohibitory Orders in Connaught Place
In a separate development, Delhi Police registered multiple FIRs over alleged violations of prohibitory orders in Connaught Place ahead of the CJP's “Lehra Do Tiranga” protest. According to sources, a crowd gathered in and around the area on Friday despite repeated announcements asking people to disperse.
The restrictions were imposed under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), prohibiting large gatherings in Connaught Place and nearby areas. Hundreds of CJP supporters and student activists reportedly held flash protests amid a heavy police presence, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
