Delhi Police have served a notice to Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke ahead of the party’s proposed “Lehra Do Tiranga” gathering at Connaught Place. The move comes amid heightened security arrangements, prohibitory restrictions and the closure of Central Park on October 16 and 17. The proposed gathering was scheduled for 5 pm on Friday, with supporters asked to assemble carrying the national flag. Police have warned that holding an unauthorised gathering in the restricted area could lead to legal action.
Security Tightened Across Central Delhi
An Instagram video reportedly shows police personnel approaching Dipke to serve the notice regarding the proposed rally. The gathering was announced after CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were sent to five days of judicial custody following their arrest over a demonstration at Jantar Mantar. The site was recently removed from the list of designated protest locations.
Delhi Police have imposed restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in Connaught Place and adjoining areas, citing law-and-order concerns. The New Delhi Municipal Council has also ordered Central Park to remain closed on October 16 and 17. According to the report, more than 25,000 police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed across central Delhi, with additional surveillance and traffic arrangements in place. Authorities have appealed to the public not to participate in the proposed gathering. Police have also indicated that a select group could be permitted to carry the national flag and sing the national anthem at an alternative location.
High Court Refuses to Ban Proposed Rally
The development follows a hearing in the Delhi High Court on Thursday, when the court declined to issue an order restraining CJP and Dipke from holding the proposed protest. However, the court recorded Delhi Police’s assurance that appropriate legal measures would be taken to regulate the gathering and address concerns raised by traders. The petition was filed by a Palika Bazaar vendor who argued that demonstrations in Connaught Place could disrupt commercial activity and affect livelihoods during the festive season. The matter has been listed for further hearing on November 3.
CJP has been demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The Election Commission has denied allegations of partisan conduct, while the BJP has accused opposition groups of undermining the institution. Dipke has maintained that the proposed flag march is a peaceful expression of democratic rights and has urged supporters to participate despite the restrictions.
