Singer Diljit Dosanjh appeared to address the controversy surrounding his earlier remark, “I’m an artist, bro,” during his Delhi concert on October 30. Performing at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Diljit clarified that identifying himself as an artist did not mean he lacked the courage to support a cause. He also said that Punjabis did not need lessons on how to fight for their rights. Without directly naming anyone, he told the audience that he loved and supported them, adding that he preferred to remain quiet for the time being.
What Triggered the ‘I’m an Artist’ Controversy?
The controversy began during an Instagram Live session a few months ago, when Diljit was asked about the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar in June. At the time, he reportedly requested that he be kept away from protests and political matters, saying that he was an artist, not a politician. He also said he did not have sufficient knowledge of the issue to comment on it. His response disappointed some CJP supporters, who had expected him to speak about matters concerning Punjab.
CJP Founder Abhijeet Dipke Shares Open Letter
CJP founder and national convenor Abhijeet Dipke also criticised Diljit’s earlier remarks. After attending the singer’s Delhi concert, Dipke shared an open letter on Instagram, recalling his admiration for the singer and his connection with his music. He said the comments made during the June protest had hurt him because he had viewed Diljit as someone who spoke up for causes.
In his letter, Dipke wrote that his disappointment was not personal and that he continued to respect the singer. He also mentioned attending Diljit’s concert in Chicago in May, before returning to India. Dipke praised the singer for taking Indian music to an international audience while maintaining his connection with his roots.
Concert Ends With Messages on Punjab and Artistry
The Delhi concert concluded with laser displays at the venue featuring the messages “Main Hoon Punjab” and “I’m an Artist.” Diljit’s comments and the open letter from Dipke have brought the earlier disagreement back into public discussion, highlighting differing expectations about the role of artists in social and political issues.
