Political negotiations between the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress have gathered pace ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Congress has reportedly demanded 172 seats as part of a possible alliance, while the SP is said to be considering offering only 50–60 seats. The difference between the two parties’ positions has created a major challenge for seat-sharing negotiations. Both parties are trying to protect their political interests while working towards a possible alliance for the upcoming election.

Congress Lists 75 Priority Seats

Congress has reportedly divided its demand for 172 seats into four categories and submitted the list to the SP. According to sources cited in the report, the party’s top-priority category includes 75 seats that it wants to secure. Several of these constituencies are in western Uttar Pradesh, where Congress believes it has political opportunities because of the presence of significant Muslim and Dalit voter populations. The party is also seeking a strong position in districts that have traditionally been important to its political strategy.

Western UP Becomes a Key Battleground

Congress has reportedly claimed seats across Saharanpur, Moradabad, Rampur, Bijnor, Meerut, Amroha and Sambhal. The party is particularly interested in constituencies with substantial Muslim populations, along with seats where it believes its support base could help the alliance. According to sources, there may be an understanding to give Congress around 12–14 seats in western Uttar Pradesh. However, the final arrangement has not been officially announced, and the negotiations are still underway.

Akhilesh Yadav’s Rampur Visit Draws Attention

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav’s recent visit to Rampur has also attracted political attention. He visited the district on Thursday to meet senior party leader Azam Khan. Sources suggest that the political situation in western Uttar Pradesh and the proposed seat-sharing arrangement with Congress may also have featured in discussions. The visit comes at a time when both parties are assessing their electoral strengths and deciding how constituencies could be divided if they contest together.

SP May Offer 50-60 Seats

While Congress has demanded 172 constituencies, the SP is reportedly considering giving its ally between 50 and 60 seats. A party leader involved in the discussions has indicated that this range is being considered, with a larger share potentially coming from the Awadh and Bundelkhand regions. The difference between the two sides reflects their competing priorities. Congress wants to retain constituencies it considers important, while the SP is weighing its own electoral calculations before deciding how many seats it can offer.

Rae Bareli and Amethi Remain Sensitive

The seat-sharing discussions also involve Rae Bareli and Amethi, two politically significant districts for Congress. Congress reportedly wants all Assembly seats in both districts, but sources say the SP may prefer to offer it two seats in each. Rae Bareli is represented in Parliament by Rahul Gandhi, while Kishori Lal Sharma represents Amethi. Congress has already submitted its list of 172 preferred seats, and the next major step is expected to be the SP’s final proposal. That list could clarify how the two parties plan to resolve their differences ahead of the 2027 election.
