Battery Tips: Nowadays, many people have more than one phone. One of these phone is used primarily, while the remaining phones are kept at home or in a drawer. Often, when these less used phones are taken out after a long time, their back covers appear pushed outward. People often consider this normal and ignore it, or try to manage it using a rubber band. But do you know that this swollen battery is no less than a time bomb? Let us know the reasons behind this and the important precautions associated with it.

Why a Battery Swells
Nowdays, lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries are used in smartphones. Over time, a chemical called electrolyte inside these batteries, begins to break down. Due to this chemical reaction, carbon dioxide and other gases start forming inside the battery. Since the battery is completely sealed from all sides, the gas does not get any room to escape. This pressure of the gas causes the battery to swell from the inside.

Causes of Battery Swelling

Not using the phone for a long time and leaving it discharged.

Leaving the phone plugged into charging for hours.

Using a local or poor-quality charger.

Frequently dropping the phone or exposing it to excessive heat.

How Dangerous a Swollen Battery Is
The gases and elements like lithium filled inside the battery can catch fire immediately upon coming into contact with air. Even a slight pressure or dropping the phone can cause it to explode. Many people make the mistake of poking a needle or pin into it to release the gas from the battery, which can prove to be extremely fatal. Even if the battery leaks without bursting, the toxic chemicals released from it can cause serious harm to health.

Immediate Steps to Take When a Battery Swells
First of all, switch off the phone. Do not put such a phone on charge under any circumstances, because supplying electricity increases the temperature, doubling the risk of blast. Keep the phone in a cool and ventilated corner, away from beds, pillows  or any flammable items. Do not throw the phone into the regular household dustbin under any circumstances. Pressure in the garbage truck can cause it to catch fire.

Seek Expert Help
Do not try to open the phone and remove the battery yourself. The safest way is to visit an authorized service center and have a technician replace the battery.
