Imran Khan FRRO Case : Bollywood actor Imran Khan is currently in the news over a legal dispute. The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) had issued him a notice directing him to leave India. Challenging the order, the actor approached the Bombay High Court. During the hearing, questions were raised about his foreign citizenship and alleged participation in protests. The matter reached a point where the actor had to assure the court that he would not participate in any protests in the future. The case has also triggered discussions about his legal status and right to stay in India.
Court Hears Challenge To FRRO Order
A bench comprising Bombay High Court Chief Justice M.C. Tripathi and Justice Advait Sethna is hearing the case. Last week, the court had granted an interim stay on the Leave India notice issued to Imran Khan. During the hearing, the actor’s senior advocate, Venkatesh Dhond, argued that his client had no association with any protest organisation. He also submitted that Imran had neither been questioned nor issued a summons. According to the lawyer, all the sections invoked in the case are bailable.
Questions Raised Over Social Media Posts
During the hearing, the state government informed the court that an FIR had already been registered in the matter. Meanwhile, Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh, appearing for the FRRO, said that the department had sufficient evidence against the actor. He drew the court’s attention to Imran Khan’s social media posts and uploaded content. He also mentioned an interview given by the actor, which had not been referred to in the petition. According to him, the actor’s activities could have a wide-ranging impact because he has millions of social media followers.
Clarification Given About US Citizenship
Imran Khan’s lawyer informed the court that the actor holds a US passport and an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card. He was born in the United States and therefore holds American citizenship. However, he has spent his entire life in India. The lawyer explained that the actor has lived in India since childhood, got married here and worked in Bollywood films. He had also previously held a Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card. The defence argued that the actor has longstanding personal and professional ties to India and that these should be considered while examining his case.
Actor Assures Court He Will Avoid Protests
During the hearing, the court observed that as an OCI cardholder, Imran Khan cannot participate in political activities in the same way as Indian citizens. The bench also questioned his right to participate in protests. It stated that the allegations were serious and that he would have to comply with the rules applicable to OCI cardholders. Following this, the actor’s lawyer assured the court that Imran would not participate in any protests in the future. The court directed him to submit a formal undertaking in this regard. The bench also questioned him about whether he was willing to accept Indian citizenship, to which his lawyer said he would seek instructions from his client.
