India suffered a crushing 87-run defeat against New Zealand in the Auckland T20 International after failing with both bat and ball. New Zealand posted a massive total of 259 runs in 20 overs, while India could manage only 172. Despite India having already secured an unassailable lead in the T20 series, the hosts finally registered their first victory. Glenn Phillips and Michael Bracewell played explosive innings, while Jacob Duffy delivered a match-winning performance with the ball.
Glenn Phillips Smashes a Brilliant Century
Glenn Phillips was the biggest star of the match, scoring a sensational 107 runs from just 49 balls. His innings included 10 sixes and six fours, putting the Indian bowlers under tremendous pressure. Michael Bracewell provided equally destructive support, smashing 65 runs off just 25 deliveries. He hit six sixes and four boundaries during his innings. Together, Phillips and Bracewell added 115 runs in only 40 balls, completely changing the momentum of the match.
Indian Batting Line-up Collapses Early
Chasing a huge target of 260 runs, India suffered an early batting collapse. Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan were dismissed in the first over, with Kishan failing to open his account. Abhishek Sharma and captain Shreyas Iyer tried to stabilise the innings but could not stay for long. Abhishek scored 27 runs before being dismissed by Matthew Fisher, while Iyer made 22 off 11 balls before losing his wicket to Adam Milne.
Middle Order Fails to Build a Partnership
India continued losing wickets during the middle overs. Axar Patel was dismissed for just seven runs, while Nitish Kumar Reddy managed 21 before becoming Mitchell Santner’s victim. Naman Dhir showed some aggression and scored 28 runs from 13 balls but was dismissed by Jacob Duffy. Vice-captain Tilak Varma tried to keep India's hopes alive with 35 runs, but the target proved too difficult. The Indian innings eventually ended at 172 runs.
Jacob Duffy Destroys India With Four Wickets
New Zealand fast bowler Jacob Duffy played a crucial role in the victory. He picked up four wickets in his four overs while conceding only 23 runs. His disciplined bowling prevented India from building any momentum after the early wickets. Matthew Fisher, Adam Milne and Mitchell Santner also contributed by taking important wickets. Duffy’s performance ensured that New Zealand remained firmly in control throughout the chase.
Indian Bowlers Struggle Against New Zealand Batters
Before India's batting collapse, the bowlers had already allowed New Zealand to post a massive total. India conceded 259 runs, their highest total conceded against an opponent in T20 Internationals, according to the report. Axar Patel gave away 43 runs in three overs, while Nitish Kumar Reddy conceded 54 runs in four overs. Prince Yadav and Mayank Yadav also struggled, giving away 49 and 48 runs respectively. Arshdeep Singh conceded 38 runs in his four overs. The defeat exposed India's bowling problems despite their earlier success in the series.
