Indian Railways is preparing to make parcel services more convenient by introducing doorstep pickup and delivery. Under the proposed system, customers will no longer need to visit railway stations to send their goods. They will be able to book parcels through a mobile app, get them collected from their homes and have them delivered to the required address. The initiative is expected to benefit individual customers, small businesses and online sellers who regularly send goods to different cities.
Service to Begin in Eight Major Cities
The facility is planned to begin in eight major Indian cities during its initial phase. These include Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Pune. After the initial rollout, the service may be expanded to other cities depending on its performance and the availability of necessary arrangements. The initiative is expected to make railway parcel services more accessible, particularly for small traders who need an affordable way to transport products across long distances.
How Will Home Pickup and Delivery Work?
Customers will be able to book parcels through a mobile application and make payments online. Once the booking is confirmed, a logistics company will collect the goods from the customer's home and transport them to the railway station. Indian Railways will then carry the parcel by train to the destination city. After arrival, the logistics partner will take responsibility for delivering the goods to the final address. This arrangement will combine railway transportation with doorstep logistics services.
How Much Money Will Be Deducted on Cancellation?
Customers who change their plans after booking will be able to cancel their parcel reservation and receive a refund. However, a cancellation charge of ₹10 will be deducted from the payment. The refund for home pickup and final delivery services will depend on the cancellation policies of the respective logistics company. Customers should therefore check the applicable terms before confirming their booking to understand which charges are refundable.
Booking Will Open 15 Days Before Train Departure
Under the proposed rules, customers will be able to book parcels up to 15 days before the scheduled departure of the train. This will allow them to plan shipments in advance instead of waiting until the last moment. The early booking window could be particularly useful for businesses that regularly send products to customers in different cities. Online payment and home collection are also expected to make the process more convenient.
What Items Can Be Sent Through Railway Parcels?
Railway parcel services can be used to transport several types of goods, including motorcycles, cars, furniture, household appliances and business-related products, subject to applicable rules and conditions. Customers will need to follow the railway's packaging, booking and transportation requirements. Logistics companies will handle pickup and final delivery, while the railway will manage transportation between cities. If implemented successfully, the new service could save customers time and provide small businesses with another option for shipping goods.
