A shocking murder case has emerged from Jagatpur village in Uttar Pradesh's Kannauj district, where a 35-year-old man, identified as Sukhbir Singh alias Monu, is accused of killing his 32-year-old wife, Sonam. According to the police and the details reported in the case, the accused allegedly tied his wife to a chair inside their house, poured petrol on her and set her on fire on Thursday morning. After the incident, he reportedly fled with their two young children. The couple had married 11 years ago after falling in love in Haryana. What began as a relationship built on love reportedly turned into a troubled marriage amid allegations of an extramarital relationship and repeated suspicion. The incident has raised serious concerns over domestic violence and the deadly consequences of possessiveness and distrust.
From a Love Marriage in Haryana to Family Disputes
Sukhbir, a native of Jagatpur village in Kannauj, had reportedly been working in a private job in Hisar, Haryana, for around 14 years. During his stay there, he met Sonam, who belonged to Shikohabad and worked for a private company. The two developed a relationship and got married 11 years ago with their families' consent. They had two children, a seven-year-old son and a five-year-old daughter. However, according to reports, tensions developed between the couple after Sukhbir allegedly discovered Sonam's relationship with another man around four years ago. In an attempt to save the marriage, he reportedly brought his wife and children back to their native village.
Fresh Allegations Triggered Another Dispute
Sukhbir had returned to Jagatpur two days before the incident for the Diwali holidays. Reports suggest that he allegedly received information from villagers and relatives about Sonam being in contact with another man while living in the village. This reportedly led to repeated arguments between the couple over the previous two days. The dispute had also reached the Sikandarpur police outpost. According to the initial account, Sukhbir left the house on Thursday morning and returned after some time carrying a bottle of petrol. He is accused of subsequently committing the crime. Police have identified suspicion over his wife's character as the alleged motive behind the murder.
Neighbours Could Not Enter the House During the Fire
Sukhbir's uncle, Jitendra, reportedly said that smoke and cries were coming from the house when the incident took place. However, neighbours were unable to enter because of the intensity of the fire and concerns about a possible gas cylinder explosion. Firefighters reached the spot and brought the blaze under control after approximately one and a half hours. Sonam's mother said that Sukhbir had called her earlier that morning and asked her to take her daughter away, adding that he would keep the children. Shortly afterwards, the family received information from the police about Sonam's death. Her mother has demanded justice and said the family would not leave until her daughter's body was handed over to them.
Police Search Underway for the Accused Husband
Chhibramau police station in-charge Kapil Dubey said that suspicion regarding Sonam's character was reportedly behind the incident. Police teams have launched searches at several locations to trace Sukhbir, who allegedly escaped after the crime. Officers have said that efforts are underway to arrest him as soon as possible. The case is being investigated, while the police continue to gather evidence and establish the complete sequence of events. The incident has once again highlighted the seriousness of domestic violence and the need to address marital disputes through lawful and peaceful means rather than violence.
