With the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections approaching, the issue of illegal immigration is becoming a fresh point of political confrontation. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched a sharp attack on the Samajwadi Party and Congress during an event in Bithoor, Kanpur. He remarked that there were “two miyas” in the country, one bigger and one smaller, and alleged that both had a strong affection for infiltrators. His comments were seen as a direct attack on Akhilesh Yadav and Rahul Gandhi. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has also criticised Akhilesh over the issue, adding another dimension to the growing political dispute.
Yogi Questions Akhilesh Yadav
Speaking at an event where development projects were announced in Kanpur, Yogi Adityanath criticised the previous governments led by the Samajwadi Party and Congress. He alleged that opposition leaders were concerned about Bangladeshi infiltrators but ignored the interests of poor families, farmers, young people and Dalits. Yogi directly questioned Akhilesh Yadav over his alleged support for infiltrators. The BJP is presenting the issue as a matter of national security and identity, while the opposition faces mounting political pressure to respond to the allegations.
Attack on the Samajwadi Party’s Past Rule
Yogi also revisited the Samajwadi Party’s previous tenure in Uttar Pradesh, accusing the former government of failing to maintain law and order. He raised issues including communal violence, farmers’ distress, unemployment and women’s safety. He further alleged that traders and poorer residents faced land-grabbing and that rioters received political protection. The chief minister also referred to Ayodhya and the Ram Temple while highlighting his government’s work. His speech therefore extended beyond illegal immigration, bringing the opposition’s governance record back into the political debate.
Pushkar Singh Dhami Joins the Attack
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has also entered the political dispute. Responding to Akhilesh Yadav’s remarks, Dhami said that describing people from Uttarakhand as infiltrators would insult the pride and sacrifices of the people of Devbhoomi. He also referred to the Rampur Tiraha incident, which took place during Mulayam Singh Yadav’s tenure, to criticise the opposition. Dhami’s comments have intensified the debate, although understanding Akhilesh Yadav’s original statement in its full context remains important to assess the exchange accurately.
Political Temperature Rises Ahead of 2027
The BJP appears keen to keep illegal immigration in focus as Uttar Pradesh moves towards the next Assembly election. The statements by Yogi Adityanath and Pushkar Singh Dhami suggest that the party may continue using the issue to challenge its political rivals. The BJP is linking it to security and identity, while the Samajwadi Party and Congress face questions over their position. However, the election is likely to involve several other major issues, including jobs, inflation, farmers’ concerns, law and order, and caste equations.
All Eyes on Akhilesh Yadav’s Response
The key question is how much influence the infiltrators issue will have on the 2027 Uttar Pradesh election. The BJP is attempting to bring it to the centre of political debate, while opposition parties will need to respond to the allegations and present their own priorities. Yogi’s remarks in Kanpur and Dhami’s counterattack have raised the political temperature. Further exchanges between leaders could keep the issue in the headlines in the coming days. Attention is now on how Akhilesh Yadav responds and whether illegal immigration becomes a major campaign issue in Uttar Pradesh.
