The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council election results have given the Samajwadi Party (SP) both reasons to celebrate and several challenges to address before the 2027 Assembly elections. Although the party increased its tally from three seats in the previous election to five this time, its performance varied across regions. The BJP maintained a strong position in western Uttar Pradesh and parts of the Braj region, while the SP faced a setback in Gorakhpur, where its official candidate finished third. These results have raised questions about the party’s candidate selection and organisational strength.

BJP Maintains Its Grip on Western Uttar Pradesh

The BJP continued its strong performance in western Uttar Pradesh and the Rohilkhand region. It won the MLC seats in Saharanpur, both seats in Meerut and the teachers’ constituency covering Bareilly-Moradabad. SP candidates failed to offer a strong challenge in several of these contests. In the Braj region, the BJP and SP shared the two Agra seats, with each party winning one. However, the overall results indicate that the BJP remains a major force in these regions.

SP Needs to Expand Its Social Support Base

Western Uttar Pradesh plays an important role in determining the political balance of the state. The BJP’s victories in the 2017 and 2022 Assembly elections were supported by its strong performance in this region. For Akhilesh Yadav, the challenge is to convert social alliances into actual votes. Along with the Muslim-Jat combination, the SP needs stronger support among Gurjar, Kashyap, Saini and other backward communities. Despite several leaders from these communities joining the party, the MLC results did not show a clear electoral advantage.

Gorakhpur Result Raises Questions Over Candidate Selection

The Gorakhpur-Faizabad teachers’ MLC constituency emerged as a major concern for the SP. Its candidate, Sanjayan Tripathi, finished third, while independent candidate Rajeev Yadav secured second place. The party had initially selected Kamlesh Yadav but later replaced him with Sanjayan Tripathi. The change reportedly led to dissatisfaction among some Yadav voters. This has raised questions about whether a section of the community supported the independent candidate instead of the official SP nominee.

Ticket Distribution Could Become a Major Challenge in 2027

The Gorakhpur result has highlighted the possible impact of dissatisfaction over candidate selection. The SP will face a larger number of ticket aspirants ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Managing disappointed leaders, preventing rebellions and keeping workers united will be important for Akhilesh Yadav. If the party fails to address internal disagreements, votes could split across several constituencies, potentially benefiting its political rivals.

Five Seats Give SP Some Reasons to Be Optimistic

Despite its regional setbacks, the SP has improved its overall performance, winning five of the 11 MLC seats. The party retained both seats in Varanasi and won the Jhansi-Prayagraj constituency again. It also captured one seat in Lucknow from the BJP and secured one of the two seats in Agra. These victories suggest that the party has strengthened its position in parts of the state, particularly in the Awadh region. The results offer Akhilesh Yadav an opportunity to identify weaknesses, improve booth-level organisation and prepare a more effective strategy for 2027.
