Explaining this unique rule in very simple words, the institute's Associate Dean Sarang Gumfekar said that you have complete freedom and only one objective: create a product, sell it, earn 10 lakh rupees, show the earnings to me, and receive your PhD.
What Did the Officials Say?
IIT Ropar Director Professor Rajeev Ahuja and Associate Dean Professor Sarang Gumfekar clarified that in traditional research there is heavy mental pressure solely to publish research papers, which sometimes led to data manipulation issues coming to light. The objective of this new model is to eliminate that pressure.
Where Did the Inspiration Come From
An initiative of this kind was recently seen in China as well, where a student was awarded a PhD merely for building a practical bridge-pylon product. In India, after BITS Pilani, IIT Ropar has now become the first IIT in the country to award a degree based on practical, real-world achievements rather than a traditional written thesis.
