Best-Selling Cars in India: Over the last 15 years in the Indian automobile Market The battle to become the country’s number-one car has been extremely exciting. Along with the changing preferences of customers sales figures have also continued to change. However, Maruti Suzuki always ruled the roads. But in 2024, the Tata Punch performed such a feat that it created history by ending Maruti's 15-year-old undisputed dominance.
Unilateral Dominance of Maruti Alto
From the year 2011 to 2017, for 7 consecutive years. Maruti Alto remained the best-selling car in the country. In 2011, the Alto recorded sales of 3.11 lakh units—the highest annual sales figure for any single car model over a 15-year period. In 2018, the Maruti Dzire took the top spot from the Alto, selling 2.65 lakh units. Subsequently, in 2019, the Alto reclaimed the number one position with sales of 2.08 lakh units. This proved to be the last year for Alto becoming No. 1.
Competition Continued Between Swift and Wagon-R
In 2020, the Maruti Swift won the title of the country's best-selling car for the first time, with sales of 1.61 lakh units. After this, in 2021–22, the Wagon-R captured the top spot for two consecutive years by leaving Swift behind. Meanwhile, in 2023, Swift made a comeback and became No. 1 again by beating Wagon-R by just 2,168 vehicles.
Tata Punch Created History in 2024
In the year 2024, Tata Motors' micro-SUV, the Tata Punch, made history by recording sales of 2.02 lakh units. It became the first non-Maruti vehicle in the last 15 years to top the annual sales chart. However, in 2025, the Maruti Dzire reclaimed the top spot with sales of 2.15 lakh units, surpassing models like the Creta and the Nexon.
Tough Competition Between Dzire and Punch in 2026

Meanwhile, the Tata Nexon holds the third position with 1.76 lakh units, followed by the Maruti Ertiga in fourth place with 1.65 lakh units, and the Wagon R in fifth with 1.64 lakh units.
