The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has started preparing its strategy for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, with a special focus on the Purvanchal region. While the state has 403 Assembly constituencies, the party is giving particular attention to 133 seats across eastern Uttar Pradesh. According to reports, nearly 50 of these constituencies are considered challenging for the BJP, while around 25 seats have remained out of its winning column for several elections. To strengthen its position, the party is preparing to deploy around 250 leaders from neighbouring Bihar to campaign in the region.

BJP Identifies Difficult Constituencies in Purvanchal

Purvanchal has emerged as a key focus area in the BJP's election preparations. The region comprises 28 districts and 133 Assembly constituencies. According to the reported strategy, the party is particularly concerned about seats in Azamgarh, Ambedkar Nagar, Ghazipur and Jaunpur. The BJP has struggled to win several constituencies in these districts over multiple elections. In the 2022 Assembly elections, the Samajwadi Party won all 10 seats in Azamgarh. A similar challenge exists in parts of Ambedkar Nagar, Ghazipur and Jaunpur. Other constituencies under the party's focus reportedly include Mau Sadar, Rasra in Ballia, Sakaldiha in Chandauli and Gyanpur in Bhadohi.

Around 250 Bihar Leaders to Be Given Booth-Level Responsibilities
As part of its strategy, the BJP is planning to involve approximately 250 MPs, MLAs and other organisational leaders from Bihar in the Purvanchal campaign. The decision is based on the geographical, cultural and social connections between eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Both regions share linguistic similarities, employment links, family relationships and comparable social equations. According to Bihar minister Ramkripal Yadav, leaders from Bihar have been asked to establish contact with people at the local and block levels in Purvanchal. Bihar-based organisational leaders will reportedly be assigned clusters of three to four polling booths in each mandal to strengthen grassroots coordination.

BJP Divides Election Campaign Into Three Levels

The BJP has reportedly divided its election campaign into three separate levels. At the first level, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP national president Nitin Nabin and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath are expected to lead major public meetings. The second level will involve Union ministers and senior state leaders organising rallies and roadshows. At the third level, leaders from neighbouring states will be deployed across different regions. Bihar leaders will focus on Purvanchal, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh leaders will cover southern Uttar Pradesh, while leaders from Delhi and Haryana will assist in western parts of the state.

RJD Questions BJP's Election Strategy
The BJP's reported plan to involve leaders from Bihar in Uttar Pradesh has also drawn criticism from the opposition. RJD spokesperson Ejaz Ahmad took a dig at the BJP's strategy, questioning the ability of Bihar leaders to influence the UP elections. Referring to the party's performance in Bihar, he remarked that these leaders could not even protect their national president's Bankipur seat, so how would they help secure constituencies in Uttar Pradesh? The political exchange comes as parties begin preparations for the next Assembly elections in the state.
