A major building collapse in Delhi's Chawri Bazaar area on Thursday claimed two lives and left another person injured. A portion of a three-storey building under construction suddenly gave way in Gali Satara, triggering panic in the crowded locality. Soon after receiving information about the incident, Delhi Fire Services teams rushed to the spot and launched rescue operations. There were concerns that people might be trapped beneath the debris, prompting authorities to deploy additional personnel and emergency equipment. One of the victims was declared dead on arrival at LNJP Hospital, while another person sustained minor injuries and was taken for medical treatment. The exact cause of the collapse has not yet been established.

Rescue Teams Rushed to the Spot After Morning Alert

According to Delhi Fire Services officials, the emergency call was received at around 10:15 am on Thursday. The information indicated that part of a three-storey under-construction structure had collapsed and people could be trapped underneath. Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to carry out search and relief operations. Initially, two water tenders, one water bowser, a Quick Response Vehicle and an Incident Response Team were deployed. As the situation developed, officials requested additional manpower and senior officers to supervise the operation. Another water tender and Assistant Divisional Officer Rajesh Shukla were subsequently sent to the location.

Two Dead, One Person Injured in the Incident
The collapse resulted in two fatalities, while one other person suffered minor injuries. One victim was brought to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital in a deceased condition. The injured person was also shifted to hospital for treatment. Emergency teams continued their efforts at the site amid concerns about people possibly being trapped beneath the fallen structure. A total of six units were involved in the rescue operation. Authorities have not yet provided a detailed explanation of what caused the building to collapse. Further information is expected as the investigation progresses.

Portion of 160-Year-Old Town Hall Also Collapses
In a separate incident, a portion of Delhi's historic Town Hall building in Chandni Chowk also collapsed. Following the incident, authorities temporarily closed the heritage structure as a precautionary measure. The approximately 160-year-old building holds an important place in Delhi's history and has witnessed several significant developments over the decades. It previously served as the headquarters of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The latest incident has raised concerns about the building's structural condition, maintenance and safety.

Safety of Old Delhi's Buildings Comes Under Focus
The two incidents have brought renewed attention to the condition and safety of buildings across Old Delhi, where several structures are old and densely surrounded by residential and commercial establishments. While the Chawri Bazaar collapse involved a building under construction, the Town Hall incident concerned a historic structure. There is currently no confirmation of any connection between the two events. However, both incidents have highlighted the importance of regular structural inspections, proper maintenance and adequate safety measures to prevent accidents in the capital's crowded neighbourhoods.
