The Delhi government has intensified its campaign against food adulteration, seizing a total of 948.9 litres of ghee during inspections at three locations on Wednesday. Acting on the directions of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Food Safety Department teams conducted raids in Bhogal Market in southeast Delhi, Najafgarh Market in southwest Delhi, and Shiv Vihar in northeast Delhi.
15 Samples Collected for Testing
During the operation, officials seized 389.9 litres of ghee from Bhogal Market and 338 litres from Najafgarh Market. In a joint operation with Delhi Police in Shiv Vihar, another 221 litres were seized. Food safety teams also collected 15 ghee samples from Bhogal and Najafgarh markets for laboratory testing.
Laboratory Reports to Determine Further Action
According to the department, the collected samples have been sent to a laboratory to assess whether they comply with prescribed food safety standards. Further action will be taken based on the test results. The department said inspections and enforcement measures are continuing to protect consumers from adulterated, substandard and unsafe food products, particularly during the festive season.
Inspection System to Be Modernised
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the government is working to equip the Food Safety Department with modern technology to speed up testing and ensure timely action against violations. The department’s workforce will also be expanded, with staff from other departments potentially deployed where necessary to strengthen inspections across the capital.
No Relaxation in Action Against Adulteration
The Chief Minister directed officials to maintain strict enforcement and said the campaign would continue throughout the year rather than being limited to festivals. She added that action would be taken against those found responsible, including branded companies, where violations are established. A public awareness campaign is also expected to be launched.
Residents Urged to Report Complaints
Gupta appealed to Delhi residents to report suspected food adulteration, poor-quality products or the sale of expired food items. Complaints can be made to the Food Safety Department’s helpline at 1800-11-3921 during office hours.
Public Health Remains a Priority
The Chief Minister said food safety is directly linked to public health, consumer confidence and citizens’ well-being. The government aims to strengthen monitoring, improve laboratory facilities, increase staffing and ensure prompt action so that food quality and safety standards are maintained across Delhi.
