UP MLC Election Results 2026 : The Samajwadi Party has strengthened its position in elections to 11 seats in the teacher and graduate constituencies of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council. According to the information provided, the party won four seats, while its candidate was leading in another constituency. This performance reportedly increased the SP’s strength in the Legislative Council from 10 to 12 members. The result is particularly significant for the party because it helped it retain the post of Leader of the Opposition.
Four Seat Victories Strengthen Samajwadi Party’s Position
After winning three seats in the previous election, the Samajwadi Party performed better this time. The BJP and SP faced close contests in several teacher and graduate constituencies. On the Lucknow graduate seat, SP candidate Kanti Singh defeated sitting BJP MLC Avanish Kumar Singh. Kanti Singh secured 56,905 votes, while the BJP candidate received 39,778 votes. The victories of Akash Agrawal from the Agra teacher constituency and Lal Bihari Yadav from the Varanasi teacher constituency were also significant for the SP. Vote counting was reportedly still underway in the Varanasi graduate constituency, where SP candidate Ashutosh Sinha was leading.
Akhilesh Calls Victorious Candidates PDA’s Pandavas
SP chief Akhilesh Yadav congratulated the winning candidates and described them as the “Pandavas of PDA.” In the party’s political strategy, PDA refers to an approach focused on bringing together backward classes, Dalits and minority communities. Akhilesh Yadav described the results as an encouraging development for the party. The SP believes that the support it received from teacher and graduate voters will strengthen its organisation. However, the electorate in these constituencies differs from that of general Assembly elections, so the results cannot be treated as a direct indicator of the 2027 election outcome.
Dimple Yadav Sends Message Ahead of 2027 Elections
SP MP from Mainpuri, Dimple Yadav, described the victories of the party’s five candidates as the beginning of change. She claimed that PDA unity had laid the foundation for change in the state. Dimple Yadav also said the success would strengthen the SP’s prospects in the 2027 Assembly elections. Her remarks emphasised the confidence of the party’s support base, young voters and disadvantaged communities. These statements reflect the SP leadership’s political position, but the outcome of the upcoming Assembly elections remains uncertain.
Awadhesh Prasad Makes Allegations Against BJP
SP MP from Faizabad, Awadhesh Prasad, linked the election results to growing support for Akhilesh Yadav. He accused the BJP of winning the Gorakhpur seat through pressure on officials and claimed that the SP had been on course to win there. He also said the BJP had suffered a setback in Agra. These allegations were made by a Samajwadi Party MP and should not be treated as independently verified facts. The report does not include any response from the BJP to these allegations.
What Strategy Will SP Adopt in the Council?
An increase in its membership could strengthen the Samajwadi Party’s role as the opposition in the Legislative Council. Retaining the post of Leader of the Opposition is important for the party because it provides an institutional platform for its voice and political presence in the House. Following its electoral gains, the SP may focus on strengthening its organisation among teacher and graduate voters. The party leadership is presenting the results as support for its PDA strategy. However, the extent to which these gains will influence the 2027 Assembly elections will become clear only in the future.
