Indian cricket’s teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has reportedly created history by becoming the youngest male player to feature in an international match in New Zealand. At just 15 years and 211 days old, he surpassed the previous record held by Bangladesh’s Mohammad Sharif. Vaibhav was included in India’s playing XI for the second T20 international against New Zealand after Ishan Kishan was ruled out with an injury. The milestone has brought the young batter into the spotlight once again.
Sachin Tendulkar Left Behind
Vaibhav’s achievement also puts him ahead of legendary Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar in terms of age at the time of playing an international match in New Zealand. Sachin was 16 years and 284 days old when he played there. Bangladesh’s Mohammad Sharif had appeared in a Hamilton Test on December 18, 2001, at the age of 16 years and six days. Pakistan’s Aaqib Javed also featured in New Zealand at 16 years and 185 days. Vaibhav has now moved ahead of all three in this category.
Chance After Ishan Kishan’s Injury
The second T20 international between India and New Zealand was scheduled for October 24 in Christchurch. Vaibhav was brought into the side after Ishan Kishan suffered an injury during the opening match. India captain Shreyas Iyer confirmed the teenager’s inclusion at the toss and indicated that he would bat at number three. The opportunity gave Vaibhav a chance to demonstrate his ability on the international stage at an exceptionally young age.
Two Changes in India’s Line-up
India made two changes for the second match, bringing in Vaibhav in place of Ishan and Prince Yadav in place of Mayank. After winning the toss, Iyer chose to bowl first, citing the expected dew as a factor behind the decision. He also stressed the importance of playing aggressive and energetic cricket. India were looking to deliver a strong performance and improve their position in the five-match T20 series.
India’s Playing XI
India’s announced line-up featured Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Dhir, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh and Prince Yadav. Iyer led the side, while Samson took the wicketkeeping role. Vaibhav’s position at number three attracted particular attention, with fans eager to see how the young batter would handle the challenge of international cricket.
New Zealand’s Playing XI
New Zealand named Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Bevon Jacobs, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner, Nathan Smith, Matt Henry, Jacob Duffy and Lockie Ferguson. Santner captained the side. With India opting to bowl first, New Zealand’s batters faced the task of building a strong opening total, while India aimed to take early wickets. Vaibhav’s record-breaking appearance added another major talking point to the encounter.
