A Mahapanchayat in Haryana's Palwal has taken several important decisions to reduce unnecessary spending and show-off during weddings and social ceremonies. Under the new guidelines, families will be encouraged to avoid expensive wedding arrangements, loud music, alcohol stalls and pre-wedding photo shoots. The Mahapanchayat has also decided to discourage boys and girls from going out together before marriage. The decisions do not stop at weddings. They also cover expenses related to death ceremonies and traditional customs during festivals. The main aim is to promote simple celebrations and reduce the financial pressure on families.

Guest List Limited to 300-400

According to the decisions, the total number of guests from both sides at a wedding should be limited to around 300 to 400. Families will also be encouraged to avoid expensive invitation cards and sending sweets or gifts along with them. Instead, invitations can be shared through WhatsApp messages or phone calls. The Mahapanchayat has also suggested limiting the number of food items to between 21 and 31 to prevent food wastage. Another decision encourages families to conduct wedding ceremonies and pheras during the daytime instead of at night. These measures are intended to reduce unnecessary expenses and make weddings more manageable for families.

No DJ or Alcohol Stalls

The Mahapanchayat has also taken a stand against loud music and alcohol at wedding functions. Alcohol stalls will not be allowed at wedding ceremonies, while loud DJ music will also be discouraged. Even inside banquet halls, music must remain within the government-prescribed sound limits. The idea is to ensure that weddings remain joyful occasions without creating noise pollution or encouraging unnecessary spending. The decisions are aimed at changing the growing trend of expensive celebrations, where families often spend heavily on decorations, entertainment and food to maintain their social status.

Restrictions on Pre-Wedding Shoots

One of the most discussed decisions is the move to discourage couples from going out together before marriage and organising pre-wedding photo shoots. These shoots have become increasingly popular, with many couples considering them an important part of wedding preparations. However, the Mahapanchayat believes that such activities can increase financial and social pressure on families. It has appealed to members of the community to avoid these practices and follow simpler traditions. The decision has sparked discussion because many people see pre-wedding shoots as a personal choice and a way to preserve memories before marriage.

Changes in Death-Related Customs

The Mahapanchayat has also agreed to completely stop the practice of organising a death feast. Another decision concerns the tradition of placing multiple bedsheets over a bier during the last rites. Instead of bringing bedsheets, people visiting a grieving family will be encouraged to bring useful items such as coconuts, ghee, camphor or other essential materials. This is intended to provide direct support to families during difficult times. The Mahapanchayat believes that families should not face additional financial pressure after losing a loved one because of expensive social customs.

Meeting Held in Palwal

These decisions were taken during a Mahapanchayat of the Vaishya Agrawal community held in Palwal, Haryana, on Sunday evening. People from Palwal, Faridabad, Gurugram and Delhi attended the meeting. The gathering was led by Balram Gupta, the platform's convenor and a former councillor. The decisions were made with the consent of the people present, and community members have been encouraged to follow them in their families. The bigger question now is how widely these changes will be adopted and whether this initiative will inspire other communities to reconsider expensive wedding and social traditions.
