India Largest Economy Prediction : Renowned global economist Jeffrey D. Sachs has made a major prediction about India's economic strength and growing global influence. He believes India could become the world's largest economy by the end of this century, with a population potentially twice the size of China's. Meanwhile, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said that India has earned global confidence through its economic capabilities and international credibility. Rising exports and growing interest in trade agreements are also being viewed as signs of India's strengthening position.
India Could Play A Major Role By Century's End
Renowned economist Jeffrey D. Sachs discussed India's economic prospects at a world symposium held in Varanasi. Speaking at the event, organised around the theme 'Ancient Wisdom for Modern Challenges', he said India's population could become twice as large as China's by the end of this century. According to him, India has the potential to become the world's largest economy in the future. Sachs also said the world is moving towards a multipolar order in which no single country or region will dominate.
Piyush Goyal Highlights India's Economic Strength
Union Minister Piyush Goyal discussed India's economic position and global partnerships at Delhi's Kirori Mal College. He said India has earned international trust through its capabilities and efficiency across different sectors. According to Goyal, several countries around the world are now showing interest in signing trade agreements with India. This reflects India's growing importance in the global marketplace.
Rising Exports Strengthen India's Global Position
According to the figures provided, India's exports increased by 14 per cent to $480 billion during the April-September period of the 2026-27 financial year. Total exports are expected to reach $1 trillion by the end of the financial year. India is seeking better opportunities in foreign markets for sectors such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, footwear, leather, gems and jewellery, and marine products. Negotiations are underway to secure lower tariffs and preferential market access for these sectors.
Corporate Responsibility Considered An Important Foundation
Jeffrey Sachs also discussed the role of large business groups and family-owned enterprises in India's economic transformation. He praised the contribution of business houses such as the Adani Group to infrastructure development. According to him, family-led businesses are not limited to generating profits; they also carry a legacy and social responsibilities. Citing former Unilever CEO Paul Polman as an example, Sachs highlighted the need to maintain a balance between corporate profits and social obligations.
Concerns Over AI Business And Public Safety
Sachs also raised questions about balancing commercial interests and public safety in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry. Referring to Anthropic and its potential IPO, he expressed concern over whether business expansion was being prioritised over controlling risks associated with advanced AI. His views, along with Piyush Goyal's remarks, suggest that India's global role will not be limited to economic growth. Responsible leadership and the ability to address technological challenges will also be important.
