Indian Stock Market Rally : The results of the US midterm elections triggered significant volatility in Asian stock markets on November 4. After the Democratic Party secured a majority in the US Congress, concerns among investors increased, affecting markets in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Technology and semiconductor stocks witnessed heavy selling. However, amid weakness across Asian markets, the Indian stock market closed higher for the fifth consecutive trading session. This rally increased investors' wealth by approximately Rs 5.83 lakh crore.
Japan And South Korea Markets Witness Heavy Losses
Among Asian markets, Japan's stock market faced the strongest selling pressure. The Nikkei 225 index fell by around 4.5%, while the TOPIX recorded a decline of approximately 2%. South Korea's KOSPI index also dropped by nearly 4% during trading. Taiwan's stock market declined by around 3%. Meanwhile, the MSCI Asia-Pacific index fell approximately 2.3%. China's CSI 300 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng recorded comparatively smaller losses.
Indian Stock Market Rises For Fifth Consecutive Day
While selling dominated major Asian markets, the Indian stock market continued its upward momentum for the fifth consecutive trading session. On Wednesday, the Sensex closed 383.55 points higher, gaining 0.50% to reach 77,301.40. Similarly, the Nifty advanced 149.75 points, or 0.63%, to close at 23,960.60. Buying activity remained strong, providing relief to investors despite the global market downturn.
Investors' Wealth Increases By Rs 5.83 Lakh Crore
The stock market rally directly benefited investors by increasing their total wealth. On November 3, the combined market capitalisation of companies listed on the BSE stood at Rs 4,87,65,636.39 crore. By the close of trading on November 4, it had increased to Rs 4,93,49,306.59 crore. This represents an increase of Rs 5,83,670.2 crore in investors' wealth in a single trading session.
Semiconductor And Technology Stocks Face Maximum Pressure
The biggest impact of selling across Asian markets was seen in companies associated with chips and Artificial Intelligence. Shares of Japan's Kioxia Holdings plunged by more than 11%. Advantest declined by around 8%, while Tokyo Electron fell approximately 6%. In South Korea, Samsung Electronics shares dropped by nearly 2%, while SK Hynix declined by more than 3%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Tech Index also weakened by around 1%. Shares of Alibaba and Xiaomi also witnessed declines.
Why Democratic Majority Increased Investor Concerns
One of the major reasons behind investor concerns is the Democratic Party securing a majority in the US Congress. Markets fear that this could lead to increased government oversight and stricter regulations for AI companies and the technology sector. Several major Asian technology companies have business operations linked to US AI investments and the semiconductor supply chain. Investors are also assessing whether the massive investments being made in AI companies will generate the expected profits in the future.
