Several parts of India are likely to experience heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds on November 5, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather warning covers several southern states and Union Territories, including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Strong winds and lightning are also expected in a number of regions.
Heavy Rainfall Expected Across Southern States
The remnants of severe cyclonic storm 'Murasu' have weakened into a depression over eastern Telangana and adjoining coastal Andhra Pradesh. The system is expected to bring widespread rainfall across southern India. Heavy rain is forecast in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, Rayalaseema, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Telangana. Thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are also likely in parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
Rain and Thunderstorm Warnings for Central and Eastern India
Parts of central India may also receive rainfall on November 5, with isolated showers likely in Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha. In eastern India, widespread rain is expected over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, while isolated rainfall is forecast in Odisha, Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal. The IMD has also issued a warning for thunderstorms and lightning in Odisha.
Punjab May See Rising Pollution Levels
Cold winds blowing from the hills are expected to affect Punjab over the next two to four days, with their influence likely to continue until Diwali. As wind speeds decrease afterwards, pollutants may begin accumulating in the atmosphere, potentially worsening air quality. Recent readings showed an AQI of 262 in Khanna, the highest among the listed cities and within the poor category. Patiala recorded 208, while Amritsar stood at 117, Jalandhar at 172, Ludhiana at 141 and Mandi Gobindgarh at 151. Chandigarh recorded comparatively better air quality, with an AQI of 63 in Sector 22 and 78 in Sector 25, both in the satisfactory category.
Murasu Weakens Into a Low-Pressure Area
The cyclonic storm 'Murasu', which developed over the Bay of Bengal, weakened into a low-pressure area on Wednesday morning. The Meteorological Centre has warned of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in Telangana's Bhadradri Kothagudem district over the next 24 hours. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also possible in parts of Khammam, while Mulugu and Mahabubabad may receive heavy showers. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 30–50 kmph are likely at isolated places across Telangana over the next 48 hours. Light to moderate rain or thundershowers may continue in parts of the state for four days, while dry weather is expected on November 8, 9 and 10.
