Akash Ambani Jio Dream : Amid discussions surrounding Jio’s IPO, described in the report as one of India’s largest public offerings, a 13-year-old story about Akash Ambani has resurfaced. His college friend, Arjun Vaidya, shared a post on LinkedIn recalling their time at Brown University in 2013. According to Vaidya, as graduation approached, most Indian students were preparing to find jobs in the United States and settle there. Akash Ambani, however, had a different plan. He wanted to return to India after completing his studies and pursue his dream of building Jio alongside his father, Mukesh Ambani.
Bringing 4G Internet Within Every Indian’s Reach
According to Arjun Vaidya, Akash Ambani frequently spoke during college about expanding internet access across India. He wanted every Indian to have 4G internet in their pocket. His vision included internet speeds comparable to those available in his college dormitory in the United States. He also imagined people living in remote Indian villages watching live cricket matches on their smartphones. At the time, these ambitions seemed ambitious and difficult to achieve to many of his friends.
A Vision From 2013 Becomes Reality
Vaidya said that an idea considered almost unbelievable in 2013 has now become part of a major transformation in India’s digital landscape. Jio’s IPO entered the market with a fundraising target of ₹30,213 crore. According to the report, the issue was fully subscribed on its first day. It also reportedly attracted bids worth more than ₹4.5 lakh crore. These figures highlighted the strong interest shown by investors in the Indian stock market.

Affordable Internet Boosts Digital Payments and Startups
According to Vaidya, affordable internet played an important role in the growth of digital payments in India. Billions of transactions now take place every month through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Easier internet access has also created opportunities for new businesses to expand. Brands such as boAt, Mamaearth, Nykaa, Zomato, Blinkit and Zepto grew during the expansion of India’s digital marketplace. Vaidya believes that cheaper data made it easier for businesses to reach customers and opened new opportunities for entrepreneurs.
Online Video Consumption Changes Across India
The arrival of Jio also transformed India’s video streaming and online entertainment landscape. Online viewership of major sporting events, including the Indian Premier League (IPL), increased. India is now among YouTube’s largest markets, while the consumption of online content has grown rapidly. Vaidya recalled that watching videos on mobile phones was once expensive and frequently interrupted by buffering. Today, millions of people can watch videos in better quality. According to him, this transformation has provided a stronger foundation for Indian startups and digital businesses.
A 10:30 PM Call Reveals Akash’s Priorities
Vaidya also shared an anecdote about Akash Ambani’s approach to business. According to him, after the IPO opened, Akash called him at around 10:30 p.m. Rather than discussing the company’s success, he asked what direct-to-consumer (D2C) businesses could learn from the IPO. Vaidya said Akash wanted future IPOs in India to achieve similar success on their opening day. He also observed that returning to India has become more attractive for young people studying abroad. Vaidya added that he hopes his daughters will want to return to India when they grow up.
