DA Hike 2026 : A major update regarding Dearness Allowance has emerged for central government employees and pensioners ahead of Diwali. According to the information provided, the Union Cabinet has approved a 3 percentage-point increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR). Following this change, DA for central government employees will rise from 60% to 63%. The increase is reportedly effective from July 1, 2026, raising the possibility of arrears for July through October.
48 Lakh Employees and 68 Lakh Pensioners to Benefit
According to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the decision taken under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will benefit approximately 48 lakh central government employees and more than 68 lakh pensioners. The increase in DA during the festive season will raise employees’ monthly income. Pensioners are also expected to benefit from the increase in Dearness Relief. However, the actual payment date and eligibility should be confirmed through the official government order.

New DA Rate to Take Effect from July 1
According to the information provided, the revised DA rate will take effect from July 1, 2026. This means the difference for July, August, September and October could be paid as arrears for four months. Employees are expected to receive these arrears along with their October salaries. The arrears will be calculated based on the additional 3 percentage points of DA applicable to basic salary. For pensioners, payment of the corresponding DR arrears will also depend on the applicable government orders.
Benefits for Employees with Rs 18,000 Basic Salary
The 3 percentage-point increase in DA will provide different amounts of additional income depending on employees’ basic salaries. An employee with a basic salary of Rs 18,000 will receive an additional Rs 540 per month. For a basic salary of Rs 30,000, the monthly benefit will be Rs 900, while an employee earning Rs 50,000 as basic salary will receive an additional Rs 1,500 per month. These figures represent only the additional benefit arising from the DA increase.
Complete Calculation of Four Months’ Arrears
If arrears for the four months from July through October are paid together, an employee with a basic salary of Rs 18,000 could receive Rs 2,160 in additional arrears. An employee with a basic salary of Rs 30,000 could receive Rs 3,600, while someone earning Rs 50,000 as basic salary could receive Rs 6,000. These calculations assume that the basic salary remains unchanged throughout the four-month period. The actual payment may vary depending on salary changes, eligibility and government orders.
Government to Face Additional Cost of Rs 10,016 Crore
According to the report, the increase in DA and DR is expected to impose an additional financial burden of approximately Rs 10,016 crore on the central government. Information has also emerged that the Cabinet meeting approved other proposals related to manufacturing, sports goods production and rural development. For employees, the key impact of the DA increase is a higher monthly payment, with the possibility of receiving arrears if the revised rate is implemented retrospectively from July.
