Heavy rain lashed several parts of Delhi-NCR on Thursday, October 15, bringing thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds. The sudden change in weather affected the national capital and surrounding areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert, warning residents about intense rainfall and potentially difficult weather conditions. Several areas experienced intermittent spells of rain as dark clouds covered the sky.
IMD Warns of Strong Winds and Lightning
The IMD forecast rainfall of 5-15 mm per hour, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Gusty winds were expected to blow at speeds of 40-60 kmph. The weather department warned that conditions could change quickly during the alert period. Residents were advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid unnecessary exposure to strong winds and lightning.
Orange Alert Remains in Force Until 2 PM
According to the IMD, the orange alert for Delhi remained in force until 2 pm on Thursday. Intermittent spells of rain were expected across several parts of the capital during this period. The alert highlighted the possibility of intense weather within a short time. The changing conditions also brought relief from the relatively warm temperatures recorded in the city.
Temperature Drops as Rain Brings Relief
Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 23.3 degrees Celsius, which was 3.7 degrees above normal. However, the maximum temperature was expected to remain around 29 degrees Celsius. Rainfall and cloud cover were likely to keep daytime conditions cooler than they might otherwise have been. The sudden showers marked a noticeable shift in the weather across Delhi-NCR.
Western Disturbance Behind the Sudden Rain
Weather experts attributed the rainfall to a western disturbance and a cyclonic circulation over adjoining areas. These weather systems contributed to the development of clouds, thunderstorms and rain across the region. Experts said the conditions were consistent with normal post-monsoon weather patterns. Such systems can bring sudden changes in weather, including short spells of heavy rain and gusty winds.
More Showers Possible Across the Region
Delhi and neighbouring areas could continue to experience intermittent showers as part of the post-monsoon weather pattern. The intensity and timing of rainfall may vary across different locations. The latest spell of rain has highlighted the possibility of sudden thunderstorms even after the main monsoon season. Residents should follow local weather updates, particularly when warnings for lightning, heavy rain and strong winds are issued.
