Train Mobile Charging Rule : Passengers who charge their mobile phones overnight while travelling by train need to take note of an important update. Indian Railways has directed officials to strictly enforce the rule requiring charging points inside train coaches to remain switched off from 11 PM to 5 AM. This means passengers will not be able to use the charging sockets near their seats during these six hours. In an order issued on October 26, the Railway Board emphasised strict implementation of the existing rule. Passengers should therefore plan their phone battery usage before beginning their journey.
Why Has Indian Railways Tightened the Rule?
The Railways has taken this step with passenger safety in mind. Recently, a charging-related incident was reported on South Eastern Railway. According to the information available, a passenger’s power bank reportedly emitted smoke and then exploded while charging on a train. The incident highlighted the potential risks associated with charging electronic devices during rail journeys. Following this incident, the Railway Board directed all zonal railways to strictly enforce the rule requiring charging points to be switched off at night.
This Is Not a New Railway Rule
The Railway Board’s directive does not introduce a new rule. On June 19, 2014, the Railways had already instructed officials to switch off charging points between 11 PM and 5 AM. Through a letter issued on October 26, 2026, the Board has now called for strict enforcement of that earlier order. The Railways has emphasised that there should be no negligence in implementing the rule and that no relaxation will be permitted. Consequently, passengers will not be able to use the train’s charging points during the specified hours.

Officials Responsible for Monitoring Compliance
The Railway Board has directed the relevant officials and staff to take the necessary steps to ensure compliance. It has also emphasised staff training and regular inspections of the system. Officials and supervisors have been instructed to conduct surprise inspections as well. These checks will help determine whether charging points are being switched off between 11 PM and 5 AM. The Railways aims to ensure that the rule is implemented on trains rather than remaining merely an administrative instruction.
What Should Passengers Do Before Travelling?
The rule will directly affect passengers travelling overnight on long-distance trains. If your phone battery is running low, it is advisable to charge it before 11 PM. Check the battery levels of your phone and other essential devices before leaving for your journey. You may carry a power bank if needed, but it is important to use it safely. If any device becomes unusually hot, emits smoke or produces a burning smell, stop using it and inform the train staff immediately.
Important Things to Remember Before Your Journey
According to the Railway Board’s directive, charging points inside train coaches will remain switched off between 11 PM and 5 AM. Passengers should plan their journeys accordingly. Keeping mobile phones fully charged in advance and reserving sufficient battery for essential calls and messages can help avoid inconvenience. Overnight travellers, in particular, should remember these timings to prevent their phones from running out of power when charging is unavailable. The Railways has emphasised strict enforcement of the existing rule as part of its passenger safety measures.
