Mumbai Airport Flight Shift : Air travel from Mumbai is set to undergo a major change in the coming months. Several flights operated by IndiGo and the Air India Group will be shifted from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to Navi Mumbai International Airport. The process is planned to begin in phases from December 2026 and may continue until the summer aviation season of 2027. The main objective is to redevelop Terminal 1 at the existing Mumbai airport and distribute flights more efficiently between the two airports.
Flight Operations Will Shift in Phases
Airlines do not plan to move all flights at once. Instead, services will be transferred to Navi Mumbai International Airport in different phases. This approach will help maintain flight operations at the existing Mumbai airport during the transition. Airlines also plan to preserve their existing operating slots so that flight schedules can be reorganized after the redevelopment of Terminal 1 is completed. However, the final dates for the transfers will depend on the necessary approvals and operational preparations.
IndiGo Plans Twelve Daily International Flights
IndiGo plans to shift 12 daily international flights to Navi Mumbai International Airport. These services include destinations such as Bahrain, Riyadh, Dammam, Jeddah, Medina, Kuwait, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Muscat, Dhaka and Jakarta. The airline also plans to introduce one daily flight to Kathmandu between February and July 2027. This would increase the number of international destinations served by IndiGo from Navi Mumbai to 12. Some domestic services will also be shifted to the airport to help connect passengers with international flights.
Air India Express Flights Will Also Move
The Air India Group is also preparing to transfer several Air India Express services to Navi Mumbai International Airport. These include flights to Jeddah, Riyadh, Dammam, Doha, Muscat and Sharjah. The airline aims to complete the process by the summer aviation season of 2027. The move is expected to expand international flight operations at Navi Mumbai airport. Passengers will need to check their departure airport carefully when booking tickets because the transfers will take place in phases.
Terminal One Redevelopment Will Increase Capacity
Terminal 1 at Mumbai’s existing airport is scheduled for redevelopment. Following the upgrade, its annual passenger-handling capacity is expected to increase from 15 million to 20 million passengers. In the initial phase, traffic equivalent to around five million passengers is planned to be shifted to Navi Mumbai International Airport. This could help manage passenger movement at the existing airport while construction work is underway. Transferring flights to the new airport is an important part of this plan.
Navi Mumbai Airport Will Expand Services
The first phase of Navi Mumbai International Airport has been designed to handle 20 million passengers annually. Its capacity is planned to increase to as many as 90 million passengers in the future. The arrival of IndiGo and Air India Express flights could expand the airport’s domestic and international operations. IndiGo is also planning to launch new international services to destinations across Asia, Africa and Europe in 2027. However, the most important thing for passengers will be confirming which airport their flight will operate from and when the change takes effect.
