SBI Credit Card Rules 2026 : There is important news for customers using State Bank of India (SBI) credit cards. Some SBI credit card rules are set to change from December 1, 2026. Under the new rules, customers may have to pay an additional charge on high-value transportation and fuel transactions. The changes will mainly affect customers who make large transportation and fuel payments using their credit cards. SBI Card announced these changes through a notice issued on October 27.

1% Additional Charge on Transportation Transactions
Under the new rules, an additional fee of 1% will apply to every transportation transaction exceeding ₹30,000. This rule will cover transactions falling under Merchant Category Codes (MCC) 4111, 4784, and 4131. For example, if a customer makes a transportation payment of ₹35,000, an additional ₹350 will be charged. However, this fee will not apply to payments of ₹25,000 or ₹30,000.

How Much Extra Will Customers Have to Pay?
The new rule can be understood through a few examples. A transportation payment of ₹35,000 will attract an additional charge of ₹350, while a payment of ₹50,000 will result in an extra charge of ₹500. This means that once the ₹30,000 threshold is crossed, the 1% fee will be calculated on the entire transaction amount. The change is particularly important for customers who frequently make large transportation-related payments using their credit cards.

Fuel Expenses Will Also Become Costlier
The revised SBI credit card rules also cover payments for petrol and other fuels. If a customer's total fuel transactions exceed ₹50,000 during a single billing cycle, an additional charge of 1% will apply to the entire fuel expenditure. This rule will cover transactions under MCC 5172, 5541, 5542, and 5983. This means the bank will consider the total fuel expenditure during the entire billing cycle rather than looking at just one transaction.

₹550 Extra Charge on Fuel Spending of ₹55,000
Suppose a customer spends ₹40,000 or ₹50,000 on fuel during a billing cycle. In that case, no additional fee will apply. However, if the total expenditure reaches ₹55,000, the customer will have to pay 1% of the entire amount, which comes to ₹550. Similarly, fuel spending of ₹60,000 will attract an additional charge of ₹600, while spending ₹75,000 will result in an extra fee of ₹750.

Which SBI Credit Card Customers Will Be Affected?
These changes will mainly affect SBI credit cardholders who spend more than ₹30,000 on a single transportation transaction or more than ₹50,000 on fuel during one billing cycle. Customers making smaller transactions will not be affected by these additional charges. Therefore, before December 1, customers should carefully monitor their credit card spending and billing cycles to avoid unexpected fees.
