Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has hinted at a possible next move by the INDIA bloc, keeping the Opposition’s strategy under wraps while promising to continue its political campaign for electoral reforms. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday after a meeting of INDIA bloc leaders, Gandhi said the opposition alliance would maintain its unity and continue its resistance, adding that disclosing its plans now would “spoil the surprise.” He stressed that the campaign would not end soon and that the Opposition remained determined to achieve its objectives. Referring to his earlier remarks about “perseverance,” Gandhi said the alliance would continue its efforts regardless of whether success came in the coming days, months or even years. He asserted that the political struggle and people’s resistance would continue and ultimately triumph.
INDIA Bloc Leaders Unite for Electoral Reforms
The meeting was held at Rahul Gandhi’s residence on Sunehri Bagh Road in New Delhi, bringing together senior Congress leaders, representatives of opposition parties, student organisations and members of civil society. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi were among those present. Other attendees included RJD leaders Tejashwi Yadav and Manoj Jha, Samajwadi Party representatives Harendra Malik, Anand Bhadauria and Mohibullah Nadvi, CPI(M) leader M.A. Baby, CPI leaders D. Raja and P. Sandosh Kumar, CPI(ML) leader Dipankar Bhattacharya, JMM representative Mahua Majhi and TMC leader Mahua Moitra. Representatives of student groups also participated in the gathering. The participants pledged to work together for the restoration of the democratic process and called for greater accountability in the electoral system. Gandhi described the unity displayed by the alliance as a source of strength and said the Opposition would continue its campaign with the same determination.
Protests Intensify Over Election Commission
The INDIA bloc’s latest meeting comes amid a series of protests demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition parties have questioned the revision process and called for corrective action. On October 6, opposition MPs attempted to march from Parliament towards the Election Commission but were stopped along the way. Gandhi subsequently staged a sit-in at the Akashvani Bhawan complex. The following day, opposition leaders gathered for a meeting in central Delhi before marching towards Jantar Mantar. On October 8, they visited Rajghat as part of their continuing campaign. Protests continued over the weekend, with several demonstrators detained amid heightened security in the national capital. The Opposition also renewed its challenge to the Election Commission by marching towards the Supreme Court and filing a joint petition. With Rahul Gandhi promising an undisclosed next step, the INDIA bloc appears determined to sustain pressure on the poll body and keep electoral reforms at the centre of its political campaign.
